Frequently Asked Questions
Why backup?
Today, almost all small businesses use computers to store critical customer information and accounting data. The loss of this data could be devastating to a company, possibly putting it out of business. Because small businesses are usually constrained for time or dealing with other priorities, data backups usually do not get performed, at least not on a regular basis. Hence, small businesses need a secure, automated, worry free backup service that protects them against the loss of their critical data.

What is remote backup?
eDigital Vault's remote backup works like regular tape or CD/DVD backups with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a drive attached to the local computer, eDigital Vault works by sending encrypted data over a broadband internet connection to a data server, located in a secure hosting center. Backups are usually done after hours while the business is closed and no one is using the computer. It's completely automatic.

What if we already have a tape backup system?
Using a tape, zip, or CD/DVD backup can be one solution, as long as you are diligent about storing your backups offsite each day at a secure location and that your data is encrypted. Remember, the loss of your backup media with your client's personal information could be just as devastating to your business as a fire. By using eDigital Vault's secure remote backup service you have no media to buy, no media to search through to restore for files, no media to lose, and you eliminate the manual effort of remembering to take the backups offsite.

How secure are remote backups?
eDigital Vault utilizes military-grade encryption technology. A user-defined password (encryption key) ensures that nobody, including employees of eDigitalVault, can access your data. eDigital Vault encrypts your data prior to transmission to our offsite backup server.

What is encryption?
Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that is used to scramble a data file. The only way to unscramble the file is with the proper encryption key. eDigital Vault clients have their own personal encryption key, that is known only to them.

What happens if I lose my encryption key?
Unfortunately, encryption keys cannot be recovered. eDigital Vault recommends keeping a record of your encryption key offsite in a safe location.

Do I need any special equipment or connection?
No. eDigitalVault uses your existing Internet connection to transmit files to our secure offsite location.

What tasks are required to run a daily backup?
None! The actual backup process itself is fully automated. Once you have configured the time, frequency and list of files to be backed up into the client software, the scheduled backup will take place automatically. All you have to do is leave your PC turned on when you leave the office in the evening..

Which operating systems are supported?
eDigital Vault will work with most PCs, laptops, or servers running Microsoft Windows versions 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, 2003 or XP. To ensure software compatibility , please verify that you have applied the most recent service packs (software patches) to your system prior to installing the eDigitalVault client software. eDigital Vault software will also backup remote volumes (files from other computers and operating systems) which are visible as a networked drive to your PC.

Can I backup network files?
Yes. Simply configure your eDigital Vault client software to backup files on a networked drive.

Can I use a dial-up connection?
Yes, but a broadband connection is preferred for clients with large offsite storage requirements.

What happens if I lose my connection in the middle of a backup?
If a transmission is interrupted in the middle of a backup, the eDigitalVault software will attempt to re-establish a connection and resume the backup from where it was interrupted.

What if I turn off my computer and miss a backup?
If you forget to leave your computer on, this is not a problem. eDigital Vault will simply resume your backup schedule when you start your system again. Files that have changed since your last backup will be identified and properly archived when it is time for the next backup.

What about firewalls?
eDigital Vault client software is fully compatible with most popular firewall devices on the market today.

How often is my computer backed up?
You set the schedule that works best, so you could backup as often as you wish.

How long does it take to do a backup?
The size of your backup, speed of your Internet connection and volume of compressed data being transmitted will determine the time for the backup. The first backup is usually a full backup so it will take the most time, afterwards the backups can be incremental--archiving only files that have changed since the previous backup.

How do I know if my computer was backed up?
eDigital Vault will email you a progress report at the completion of each remote backup. This lets you know that your backup was completed. If eDigitalVault experiences any problem with the backup, the log files attached to the progress report email will identify the files that have not been archived or other trouble found.

How do I restore my data?
eDigital Vault client software on your new computer, connect to the Internet and restore all of your data up to the point prior to the unfortunate event. In order to recover you data, you must have your encryption key or recovery diskette created at the time you first installed the original backup client software.
